Billy Hunt - California Callin

Billy Hunt & The Modern Classix are back with a bang with their new single ‘California Calling’. The same infectious energy, in a different direction and style. You don’t want to miss out on this one.

Billy Hunt is a well known figure within the local scene but his influence is by no means limited to Suffolk. His single ‘No Occupation’ reached #2 on Australia’s Banks Radio chart, he’s played at The Cavern Pub in Liverpool, supported the Gulps and toured with Cosmo Pyke across the Uk.

Despite all this wider success, Billy has always remained connected to his Suffolk roots, recording and releasing California Callin back home, here in Suffolk.

The new single is a marked departure from the rock and roll and distorted guitars of No Occupation. California Callin is simpler in production, brighter and much more introspective, paying homage to Jim Morrison with the line ‘They all go to Paris to die’.

Although California Callin channels the vibes and sunshine of the West Coast, the song is tainted by longing and melancholy. Singing over a fast driving rhythm section, Billy’s emotive vocals carry a weight of experience and vulnerability.

This combination - melancholic lyrics and vocals over a fast driving rhythm section - is precisely what makes this song so effective. Because of this, the song is neither overtly happy or sad, yet there is an obvious feeling of emotional depth and a deeper meaning.

Like many other great songs, listeners are invited to find their own meaning within the ambiguous relationship between the lyrics and the music.

The song has already gained a lot of traction. Billy playing the song live on Facebook has garnered over 10k views in no time at all, plenty of magazines and radio stations are reviewing and playing the single and everyday it seems to grow.

California Callin is energetic, passionate and most importantly…it’s authentic. The current style of writing feels incredibly true to Billy and for that reason, I look forward to hearing more songs from him. So stay tuned.
